Community Organizing and the Law

In preparation for the 2016 Federal Election, Osgoode Visiting Professor Jamil Jivani and his course, Community Organizing and the Law, took law students on a door-to-door campaign to encourage voter participation among the Jane Finch community.   Complementing the efforts of community partners, students joined Jivani’s non-partisan voter mobilization group called Jane and Finch Votes with a goal to get 800 people agree to vote. For a community with low voter turnout, residents were able to make connections between voting and the political decisions that affect their everyday lives. For Osgoode students, the course helped them understand the lived experience of Jane Finch residents and experience first-hand the hard work behind community mobilizing.
