Free Tax Clinics for the Black Creek Community

engaged-research

For over five years, York’s School of Administrative Studies (led by Prof. Joanne Magee), in partnership with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada and the York University-TD Community Engagement Centre (CEC), offers free income tax preparation clinics.  Under the supervision of Prof. Magee, York accounting students practice their skills and the CEC promotes the service among community partners and books individual appointments for low-income residents from the Black Creek community.  Over the years, over a thousand residents have been assisted including many who are newcomers, seniors and/or residents without income.  The free tax clinics provide experiential learning opportunities for students, help students understand the needs/challenges facing low income individuals and provide a much needed service to hundreds of area residents.
